Companies' & Schemes' Management Systems PDF E-mail

Objective

This fourth step looks at how companies and schemes can understand, share or even align each other's best practices in their individual management systems.

Several areas are considered, such as system’s structure, codes of conduct, databases, existing tools and relationship with/recognition of other schemes. Within these areas, a number of criteria have been identified to allow mapping how the various systems are structured, which areas they cover and how they operate.

This is an area where diversity can be accommodated without compromising other parts of the convergence project. The key objective here is to build greater understanding, transparency and trust, allowing these various bodies to work together.

The Expert Working Group on Companies' and Schemes' Management Systems was launched in November 2009, and is constituted of the following members:
  • Lena Bergendahl, Coordinator Environmental & Social Issues, ICA
  • Giles Bolton, Ethical Trading Manager, TESCO
  • Leslie Collins, Global Operations SC Social Env Responsibility Program Manager, HP

Development process

Drafting

The Expert Working Group has completed work on the definition of the key review criteria, allowing the execution of a gap analysis which was used as starting point to build the draft reference requirements on buying companies’ and schemes' management systems. During development fo the tool it was acknowledged that buying companies' and schemes' management systems each contained sufficient specificities to warrant for the drafting of two separate tools. The EWG therefore first concentrated its efforts on buying companies' management systems (Supply Chain Social Performance Management Systems). This tool was adapted for schemes for the purpose of the Equivalence Process, and intergrated therein as a questionnaire.

Consultation

The first tool, the draft reference tool on SC Social Performance Management Systems, was opened to public consultation on the GSCP website in August 2010, with the consultation running through to end September 2010. This consultation generated a record participation with over 400 comments received. The Expert Working Group has reviewed and analysed all these comments, and integrated them in the draft reference tool as relevant.

Review

Advisory Board's input
The draft reference tool was submitted to the Advisory Board for review in October 2011. The Advisory Board will formulate recommendations for improvement of the reference tool and share these with the Executive Board.
